Torture6/13/2017 Songs that passionate express grief and sorrow have a special place in my heart. While I love songs of joy and encouragement, acknowledging the pain of life is equally important. Every day, we are surrounded by brave people who are literally struggling to get out of bed, walking in more pain than we ever see, and trying bravely to put on a cheerful face for those around them. Pain is part of life, and no one is immune from its touch. At one point in our lives, we will experience loss that wounds our very souls. It is during these times, we need the comfort of songs of lament.
My latest song, Torture, cowritten with my mother, Sharon Aubrey, is one of those special songs. Torture expresses the pain of losing your future or dreams. Sometimes our dreams are wrapped up in a person whom we lose. Renvek's daddy inspired some of the lyrics in this song when he said, "it's torture to feel my heart keep beating knowing his has stopped." Other times, our dreams are lost when we face a tragedy: a life changing injury, loss of a relationship, car crash, job loss, or critical medical diagnosis. Life throws us a curve ball and changes all the plans we had for our future. Somehow we have to learn to live through it. It's difficult because we don't know how to restart. The past prevents us from moving forward. Our love doesn't stop just because our loved one or dreams died and finding hope for a new, good future is a struggle. So if you've ever had to pick the pieces of your life and try to move forward with a broken heart, this song is for you.
